Salvia Divinorum Philosophy

The Spiritual Implications of Salvia Divinorum upon Modern Society

There is an ancient herb becoming ever-more-popular amongst the public mass seeking greater axiology; a herb that has been used by Mexican shamans for centuries as a channel for spiritual divination, known to the traditional medicine men as Las Hojas de la Pastora (The Leaves of the Shepherdess). The rest of us are probably more familiar with its Latin classification of Salvia Divinorum.

Traditionally the fresh leaves of this plant are rolled into a cylinder and chewed. The active constituent, Salvinorin A, is rapidly metabolized by the body, thus large amounts of leaves must be chewed to reach the desired shamanic state of philosophy.

However, in modern times, amongst neo-shamans practicing dialectic principles and recreational users seeking understanding and connectivity via "weltanschauung", smoking has become the preferred (or easiest) method of ingestion. There are both benefits and negatives regarding this method. Effects from smoking the Salvia Herb (and its respective extracts) produce profound effects with far less plant material being necessary, which in a way, appears more economical. However, the experience produced by smoking Salvia Divinorum tends to be very short-lived. So short-lived that often one is torn from reality with such speed that one cannot grasp anything tangible from the metaphysics of the experience, and upon regaining 'normal' consciousness, there is little left but awe and more commonly, fear.

The effects are far-reaching, seemingly infinite in diversity, and rarely less-than-profound. Many report time travel, out of body experiences, and various contact with entities and spirits. What does this mean, for the materialistic, ego-filled, society which is quickly coming into strange contact with this mysterious herb?

Regardless of the method of ingestion, it appears the Salvia Divinorum Plant possesses very potent abilities in the trained hand. The spiritual aspects of Salvia Divinorum cannot be denied, even by those with a seemingly non-spiritual background. For this reason, I think the psychology of fear becomes a predominant factor of the Salvia experience for most. It seems there is little to fear of the Salvia Divinorum plant herself, but the Effects Produced by Salvia are often beyond what modern humans are willing to accept.

The main commonality between 'breakthrough' Salvia Experiences is that of ego dissolution. While this is open to further quodlibet debate, one is kicked with speed from their happy, sheltered life and mind set, into a field of infinite unity. The sense of self is lost. There is no you or I. There is everything; there is one. It is little wonder why this strikes fear into the hearts of many.

There are plenty of reports of people, typically of a 'recreational' mind-frame, that have been scared out of their wits from just a brief encounter with salvia's own version of ego loss. Much for the reasoning for these types of experiences stem from modern society. Most have driven themselves so far from spirituality, that when they finally confront 'spirit', they cannot grasp the great wisdom before them; becoming scared, fearful animals.

In these times, many have forgotten their roots; their source, their spirit. their values. This source lies encoded into the doctrines of nearly all religions, cults, tribes, etc. The source is unity. The goal of these religions is typically a common one: to eventually reunite one's separated soul back with the soul of Everything. In our wayward times of subversive political ideology, we've forgotten this fact. We've forgotten who we are, what we are, and in effect, what God is (notice the word 'who' was not used in respect to God). From this diversion humanity has taken as of late, we've willingly broken a channel to divinity. It is my belief, that the resurgence of psychedelic use, in conjunction with shamanism and 'old ways', is creating a entelechy of reawakening to spirituality, slowly but surely, among humanity. It comes as no surprise, that during this time of change and growing Shamanic epistemology, the mysterious herb Salvia divinorum gains much popularity as the foundation of Shaman Understanding.

What purpose can Salvia Divinorum serve for us?

It appears from the literature, history, and modern documentation, that Salvia Divinorum is surely an eye-opener. Many have resurrected the spiritual Use of the Salvia Herb, while others abuse it, most-often to their disliking. It is often said that the Salvia Divinorum plant possesses a very powerful, often 'feminine' spirit. It's often stated that this spirit discourages abusers, scaring the daylights from them, but greatly rewards those with pure intentions and conviction of heart to the spiritual journey. This is fairly common amongst numerous spiritual plant allies as well.

What must one do to benefit from the experience? Seemingly one must first be well-schooled with the effects. This means being fully prepared for ego dissolution, in all its shapes and form; something that is far easier said than done. One could say, in theory, that salvia is like a key, that quickly and effectively, unlocks the door to the spirit world that shamans of native cultures seem to possess much knowledge of. However, most doctrines will also explain, that although these keys exist, it is folly to depend upon them for contact with the alternate realities. Doing so becomes a weakness, whereas power and strength are needed when traversing the energetic planes to maximize the spiritual dialogue you can experience between the realities of the universe.

It is quite safe to say that relying solely on this herb for spiritual contact would not be wise. Very little is still known about the physical effects of the Salvia Divinorum plant, and too little has been documented on its use by natives. What we're left with are some principles that ought to be put into play for anyone seeking contact with this plant and her world(s).

As part of our doctrine for using salvia, we believe when it comes to botanical knowledge, the natives typically know best. This is ever-apparent, especially in the Amazon region, where new cures for disease are readily found. Taking this knowledge into perspective, it would be wise to assume, that what we have learned of Salvia from natives, is probably the best information we possibly have regarding the plant. As stated before, natives traditionally use the rolled leaf (quid) method. This appears substantially more rewarding, experience-wise, than smoking the Salvia Divinorum plant. There are many reasons for this, most of all the increased duration of the experience and the slow come-up and come-down allowing for sufficient sensory acclimation.

Compared to smoking Salvia Divinorum, the Saliva quid tends to be generally easier on the psychological portion of oneself, because one can come to terms with the effects as they manifest and accumulate. Would it not be smart to assume that in this case, the native probably know best? They did not smoke the Salvia Divinorum plant. Surely there are sufficient reasons for this, but as of right now, we know too little about traditional use. That being said, if spiritual use of the Salvia plant is to become common, it might be best if picked up in the footsteps of the native medicine men. As to where she'll lead any of us, we'll find out someday.

Within the ethics of the salvia experience, It is sad to see this wonderful, awe-inspiring plant being marketed to recreational crowds. However, this in its own way, could be serving a higher purpose, for how often does a normal modern being get to taste the bitter-sweet fruit of Spirit? It may be, that on the grand scheme, a broader and wider range of people are going to be ushered through the doors of ego death, further aiding support to the spiritual revolution that society is in desperate need of; the same spiritual revolution that various cultures the world over, have predicted for this very generation. Does it seem at all odd, that an Aztec herb of divination becomes widely popularized, during the time of the Aztec (and Mayan) calendar change... the same calendar change predicting spiritual rebirth in AD 2012? Could this be merely a coincidence?

Sadly, nobody can tell at this point. All that is left, are theories, assumptions, and guesswork. Regardless, we have a powerful plant spirit on our hands, and if more is to be learned and gleaned, we must all be responsible for her well-being and survival. This means, standing up against legislation at all costs. In conjunction, every able, interested, being ought to be growing their own Salvia plant, to ensure the plant may live on far longer than it takes to destroy the population in their native habitat. With that being said, I conclude with encouragement of everyone to help protect the Salvia Divinorum plant, to bond with her, and see just what Salvia Divinorum might hold for you. -- by "Y're Me"
